I first met Gary when he and Guy picked me up hitch hiking. Guy was driving his black ’57 Chev convertible and Gary was ridin’ shotgun. I was very impressed with the dragons painted on Guy’s car seats, and both had their collars up and a peroxide streak in their hair. Quickly realizing their incredible cool, when Gary asked me, “Where ya going?” I replied, “Where you guys going?” and our friendship began. When I heard of Gary’s death (along with the sadness) I experienced a flood of great memories… The Shack, Dandy Hamburger, Touche Club, Castle Farm… Gary, BoBo and Apke holding court on summer nights in front of Pasquali’s across from the Monte Vista. The teasing, the fun, and the camaraderie… just as Jim Apke said, Gary’s laugh was contagious. Gary was always an ambassador of kindness and good will. He will truly be missed. My deepest sympathy to his family.
