George Edward Wermeling, 87, of Covington, KY passed away on May 5, 2022 at the Pavilion at Kenton (formerly St. Elizabeth Hospital in Covington) where he had lived since 2017 after suffering a stroke. George was born on July 26, 1934 in Covington, KY to the late Albert H. and Caroline J. Wermeling. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years: Shirley (nee Elliott) Wermeling; brothers: Albert G. and Gilbert H. Wermeling and sister: Ida Bruggen. George was a lifetime member of St. John Church and a graduate of Holy Cross High School. He was very active in Covington politics having served as City Commissioner for several terms and was elected Mayor of Covington in 1975. George was a Reds fan regardless of their win / loss record and was an avid reader. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law: Melinda and Tim Lampke and grandchildren: Max and Carley Lampke. In addition he leaves behind: Sarah Drew, Mary and Roy Walton, Kathy Smith and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will take place on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at St. John Church from 10:00 AM until the Memorial Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM.
