Leave a message of condolence

Katie Meyer, beloved wife, daughter, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, passed away on
the morning of April 16 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Katie will be remembered for the way she lived: fully, generously, and fearlessly. She was
brilliant, vibrant, thoughtful, and kind. Her spirit, humor, and compassion left a lasting mark on
everyone who knew her.

Her loss is immeasurable, but so is the impact she leaves behind in the countless lives she
touched around the world, in her community, and in her family.

Katie was a proud Covingtonian; wherever she was in the world, Covington was always home.
She grew up in Old Seminary Square, attended Sixth District and Latonia Elementary, and
graduated from Covington Latin in 2000. While in high school, she competed on behalf of the
United States in the 1999 Trampoline & Tumbling World Championships in South Africa.
Katie earned a bachelors from the University of Kentucky and a Masters in Urban Policy from
the New School in New York City. She travelled the world during her studies, immersing herself
in South and Central America, working in public administration in New Delhi, India and in British
Columbia, Canada. Yet her heart remained in Covington, and she returned here in 2010.

When she returned, she embraced a mission to improve our city that she would never let go.
Her dedication to that mission was profoundly evident in her work as Executive Director of
Renaissance Covington from 2010 to 2019. Katie was a driving force behind the revitalization of
downtown Covington. She championed economic growth, supported small businesses, and
helped to cultivate Covingtons vibrant sense of place that so many continue to love today.
Katie was instrumental in launching and growing community events including the Farmers
Market, RoeblingFest, Art Off Pike, the Covington Night Bazaar, and the Running of the Goats,
while also helping to lay the groundwork for the citys long-term sustainability and success. In
2015, she became a published author when she co-wrote Walking Cincinnati, a guide that
highlighted the history and culture of many Cincinnati and NKY neighborhoods. In 2017, the
national organization Main Street America awarded Renaissance Covington the Great
American Main Street Award in recognition of Katies accomplishments.

In March 2012, Katies drive to build community led her and her wife, Bonnie, to open Pike
Street Lounge, a vibrant gathering place built around creativity and hospitality. It stood as a
reflection of Katies gift for bringing people together and creating spaces where others felt
welcome - all while she was continuing her important placemaking work in a variety of other
roles.

After helping to create a public internet network in Covington, Katie joined Cincinnati Bell in
2019 to lead UniCity, the companys national smart cities initiative. While at Cincinnati
Bell/altafiber, Katie worked with cities around the country, from Honolulu HI to Dayton OH, to
broaden access to the internet and technology.

In August of 2023, Katie became the CEO of the Downtown Dayton Partnership, where she
championed economic development, supported small businesses, and helped create a more
vibrant, connected, and inclusive community. While in Dayton, she served on the Board of
Directors of Heritage Ohio, YWCA Dayton (OH), Boys and Girls Club of Dayton (OH). The Boys
and Girls club of Dayton described Katie as a remarkable leader, a courageous voice for
equity, and a radical champion for young people.

Katies sense of leadership and civic duty was also evident through her roles in numerous other
organizations, including serving as a board member for organizations such as Be Concerned,
the Covington Business Council, the Kentucky Foundation for Women, and Skyward. Katie
served on the development committees of the Esperanza Latino Center and the Life Learning
Center, and chaired the Outstanding Women of Northern Kentucky Awards in 2023.

Yet there was perhaps no endeavor that illustrated Katies fiercely inclusive spirit better than her
work with Northern Kentucky Pride and the NKY Pride Center. Katie was the incredibly
tenacious and deeply organized driving force behind so much of the Northern Kentucky Pride
Centers work. She didnt just believe in making Northern Kentucky a safer, more inclusive, and
vibrant place for the LGBTQ+ community, she actively made it happen.

She was a true advocate with a rare talent for turning ideas into action and making people -
from first-time volunteers to long-time advocates - feel welcomed, valued, and essential.
Whether she was helping lead the creation of the NKY Pride Awards, coordinating PrideFest
and the parade, or simply connecting members of the community, Katie showed up when it
mattered most. Always. Her impact will continue to be felt in the community she helped build
and the example she set for others.

Katie was also a devoted and beloved mother, and her children wish to share what she meant
to them. She taught them to dream bigger than they ever imagined, and to believe they were
capable of achieving anything - including traveling to places they once only dreamed of. She
widened their perspectives on life in ways too countless to name and was both a mentor and a
hero to them. Katie is, and always will be, the light of their world. In her final year, her grandson
Dax brought her endless joy - she was so very happy to be his Kkay and we are so deeply
grateful that she got to spend that time loving him and being loved by him.

Above all, Katies greatest love was her wife, Dr. Bonnie Meyer, who was the center of her world
and her trusted partner. From the moment they met in 2011, they were inseparableit was love
at first sight. They wed in New York Citys Central Park in 2012, and together they built a life
filled with love and passion - for each other, for their friends, and for a better world.

She is also survived by her loving parents: Joe and Dale Meyer; children: Alyssa Nickles and
Kyle (Jade) Nickles; brothers: Chris (Megan) Meyer, David (Marisa McNee) Meyer and Jon
(Maranda) Meyer; grandchild: Dax Nickles; niece: Lydia Meyer and nephews: Lucas Meyer and
Ryan Meyer.

A celebration of Katies life will take place on Sunday, May 3, 2026 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Hotel Covington, 638 Madison Avenue, Covington, KY 41011. Her family looks forward to
gathering with all who loved her to honor the extraordinary life she lived.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that contributions be made in Katies memory to the
NKY Pride Center, an organization close to her heart.

Katies life was a gift, and her legacy will continue to live on in the communities she shaped and
the people she inspired.

Condolences

My sincere condolences to Bonnie & family. Katie was my sister & I’s childhood best friend. I remember running through the backyards of West 11th & jumping on the trampoline. You always had new tricks to show us. Playing with Queenie dog and hide & seek in your parents home. Burning things in your easy bake oven. We rekindled our friendship during the Pike St. Lounge days and you even convinced me to show my photography there. You inspired everyone everywhere you went with such kindness & enthusiasm. A dedicated public servant & fighter for human rights. This loss is immeasurable. I will remember you fondly and never forget your laugh. Xoxo

Even when we were young children, I always knew Katie was going to do amazing things. She was so smart and showed immeasurable kindness to everyone. I’m incredibly grateful that I was right in thinking that of her - because she was a beautiful human being inside and out. Her kindness, thoughtfulness, and determination never wavered and her spirit will live on through the cities and the people she impacted in her short time with us. She accomplished more in 41 years than most of us could only hope to if we live to be 80. It was a privilege to watch her change the world. My heart goes out to her beloved family during this time of incomprehensible loss.

I instantly liked her and was so impressed with her unique and special ways of viewing situations, problems, and solutions. Although I lost track of her over the last few years, I was so shocked to see this news. She was an incredible person, and I know she will be missed by many many people.

To Katie’s Family, I want you to know how deeply Katie impacted not only those closest to her, but so many of us in her professional circle as well. She was a pivotal force in my career at a time when it mattered most. Katie had a rare ability to see possibility where others saw obstacles—nowhere was that more evident than in her passion for initiatives like Covington Connect in the City of Covington. She believed in the power of smart, connected communities to truly change lives, and she didn’t just advocate for those ideas—she brought people together to make them real. Because of her encouragement and belief, I stepped into opportunities that shaped my path and went on to impact thousands of people across our region. That ripple effect is part of her lasting legacy. But what made Katie truly special wasn’t just what she accomplished—it was how she made people feel. She lifted others up, made you believe you could do more, and brought an energy and warmth that is impossible to replace. On a personal level, I loved Katie like a sister. Her friendship meant more to me than I can fully express, and I will miss her deeply—the conversations, the laughter, and the way she showed up so fully for the people in her life. Please know that her influence lives on in the work she inspired, the people she encouraged, and the countless lives she touched. She made a difference in ways that truly matter. With heartfelt sympathy and gratitude for sharing her with all of us, Chris Schoeny

Katie was a good friend at UK. We played club soccer together at UK and quickly realized we also both cared deeply about social justice. She was funny, smart, and passionate. We got to attend the 2003 Women's World Cup in Columbus together. Sadly the venue was pretty empty. But we moved down to practically field level, met a few fans from other countries, laughed and talked, and watched women from all over the world play their hearts out, which I will remember forever. Thank you for all you gave to the community, Katie! You will be so missed.

I knew Katie throughout my twenties and she was a close friend and confidant as I navigated my gender transition from female to male. At one point, Katie took over the lease from my apartment when I moved out. I remember the parties she hosted there and the countless times we all “got wild” - a phrase I often heard her use - “when are we gonna get wild?” More importantly, Katie modeled activism for me. From Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, Lexington Pride, traveling to the Allied Media Conference in Detroit, and the dozens of local queer events we attended, organized or performed in, Katie was a constant presence - fierce and authentic. The first to show and the last to go. She inspired me during a time when I needed inspiration. She was the beating heart of a friend group who took me in when I was 22 and at an utter loss. As a matter of fact she was in South America when I met these friends and half the time they talked about this, apparently iconic friend named Katie and by the time she came back home I couldn’t wait to meet her. She moved away from Lexington shortly before I did. I am now on the development team at The LGBT Center in NYC. Katie’s mark on me is deep and it is apparent in the work I do every day. I will carry her in my heart forever.

Patrick J. Nugent - Apr 17, 2026
I'm devastated to hear this news. I enjoyed working with Katie and was inspired both by her leadership here in Dayton and for her unflagging enthusiasm for her native Covington. She had the most marvelous combination of humility and self-confidence, caring deeply for others and quietly proud of her own work and accomplishments. Everyone here at the Dayton Performing Arts Alliances offers our deepest condolences to her family. Personally I will miss (have already missed!) her warm and enthusiastic presence in our community. May the angels lead you into Paradise, and the hosts of heaven welcome you.

Katie was a light to me as well. She was so “kind” and full of energy and helpful to everyone. She was inclusive and motivated. And did things the “right way” when ever I talked to her. May god rest her soul. Incredibly saddened. God bless the family and loved one! A light that shines will never stop. I met Katie Meyer when she worked in Covington. She was younger than me - I believe instantly excited about everything. I loved her immediately, she was infectious and ready to go. She instantly stood up for those who couldn’t stand up for themselves and was fearless about it. Nothing was impossible. We were working on a wireless project at the time in smart city. She was innovative so right in the action. Tip of spear. She started working with Dan Mazza and Cincinanti bell with a project to help people in Covington in a digital inequality enablement solution. Uplifting the “have nots” in a way that helped the “haves” as well. A truly “everyone benefits solution”. One of the first in the country of its kind. Perfect for her as she was tech, Gov and understanding of process and driven to push through. She also had heart. Then she went on to to more of that in more places. I have talked to her a fews times to give her #hope and #love recently. I wish more. Absolutely beautiful human inside and out.

Dayton has lost a community leader. Katie was instrumental in bringing the NATO PA to life, spearheading the visual efforts downtown including the Dayton Peace Sign that is now outside the Schuster Center, and even coining the phrase ‘NATO Village.’ Our community is forever changed because of her dedication and vision at the DDP. Katie will be missed, my condolences go out to Katie’s family and loved ones.
