Mabel Marie Lucas (nee Hendren), 98, of Edgewood, KY , departed this life to live forever in the presence of God, on Monday, July 21, 2014 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood, KY. Mrs. Lucas was preceded in death by her husband, R.L. Lucas, who died in 1981; her parents, Daisy and Jim Hendren; brothers Roy and Howard Hendren and sister, Louise Hendren. Mrs. Lucas is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Dave) Hampton of Edgewood, KY and her son, Larry (Doris) Lucas of Independence, KY and her grandchildren, Leesa (Ozzie) Romero, Jimmy Lucas and Jon Lucas. After earning a teaching certificate from the University of Kentucky, Mrs. Lucas began her career in a one-room schoolhouse in Napoleon, Kentucky. She taught first grade and public school music in Warsaw, Kentucky. After moving to Latonia she sold real estate and insurance and later served as Director of Southside Baptist Church Day Care Center, where she also taught kindergarten. At Latonia Christian Church Mrs. Lucas was superintendent of the Primary Department and sang in the choir. At Madison Avenue Christian Church, where she was a member for over 55 years, she served on the staff as Director of Maturians, a ministry for older adults, and played the piano for the Sunday School Assembly. Mabel found contentment in life because she found joy in simple things. Besides loving her children and grandchildren, she also loved Abraham Lincoln; her cat, Kringles; her Oldsmobile; the Lawence Welk Show and the U.K. Basketball team. Mabel’s enduring legacy is that she possessed the ability to see only the good in others and spent her life loving and serving people. A private service was held at her request. Burial was in the Warsaw Cemetery, Warsaw, Kentucky. Memorials are suggested to Madison Avenue Christian Church, 1530 Madison Avenue Covington, KY 41011. Connley Brothers Funeral Home in Latonia, KY is serving the family. Online Condolences may be expressed at www.connleybrothersfuneralhome.com

Nancy,
I’m Sorry to hear about your mom’s passing, but she lived a long & happy life. I hope she didn’t suffer much in the end. She was always special to me. I think of you often & wonder where you are & what you are doing. I remember the good times we had at M.A.C.C.

Nancy, so sorry to hear about your Mom. Bev and I have not had very good success in keeping in touch with any of our remaining family members. Know that we have often talked about your Mom and you with fond memories of growing up with family life in Hebron and the rest of the communities of family. Barb

Dear Nancy:
Katie called and told me about your mom. We send our sincere condolences. We all loved your mom and my mom and dad especially adored her too. When we moved to Latonia from Mobile, Alabama your mom and dad were the first and best friends my parents had. I remember having dinner at your house all the time. Again, our prayers are with you and your family. Take care. Peggy Doyle Ihlendorf
